Musée des Égouts de Paris

One of the most unusual and yet surprisingly fascinating attractions in the city is the Musée des Égouts, a museum dedicated to Paris’ sewers.

The Musée des Égouts de Paris is an underground museum dedicated to the Parisian sewer system, and it is located in a section of the real city sewers by the Seine. The museum offers the unique occasion to visit a real, functioning sewage system, and a famous one at that.

Our recommendations

As the Musée des Égouts is located in the actual sewers of Paris, come prepared. It will be humid and a tad foul-smelling. Nothing unbearable, just be warned.

As you might know, Victor Hugo spends quite some time describing and detailing Paris’ sewers in his celebrated novel Les Misérables . When you visit the museum you’ll get a chance to observe what Hugo himself was so enthralled by.

The evolution of the system, its usage throughout history, its disastrous malfunctions, as well as some of its dark tunnels and arched passages are all things you’ll get to explore on your visit to the Musée des Égouts.

Esplanade Habib Bourguiba, 7th arrondissement.
