Motosharing in Paris - The best Electric Moped Apps

Motosharing is your go-to option if you need to move in Paris independently and easily. With a moped, you can get anywhere quickly and stop wherever you want.

Paris is a rather large city and unfortunately, not everyone is an expert cyclist, meaning that some of us need a little extra help to cover all those kilometres every day. Well, motosharing is the perfect solution if you’d like to move around the city independently but want the extra speed and ease granted by a moped.

With an electric moped, you won’t get stuck in traffic as you would on a bus or taxi, while also not having to work around public transport timetables and limitations. Luckily for you, in Paris, there are plenty of motosharing companies that provide excellent services and have vehicles available all over the city. They are Cityscoot, Yego, and Cooltra.

Cooltra motosharing electric mopeds parked
Cooltra mopeds are easily recognisable by their colour and simple design.

For the sake of clarity, we must specify that there are three popular kinds of electric two-wheelers used in Paris.

  • Mopeds: small electric motorcycles that you can sit down on.
  • Stand-up e-scooters: the ones that look like kick-scooters. Sometimes referred to as electric scooters.
  • E-bikes: these are electric bikes.

The motosharing companies that we are focusing on in this article (Cityscoot, Cooltra, and Yego) offer mopeds exclusively. If instead, you’d like to find out more about stand-up e-scooters, we have an article just about them that you can check out.

Prices also vary with each company, depending on the offer or package you get. Here is a summary table of the price range you can expect for each one of them.

App Cityscoot Yego Cooltra
Price range* €0.26 - €0.39 per minute €0.24 - €0.36 per minute €0.25 - €0.30 per minute

*The price range indicates the lowest and highest price per minute of travel available for each company.

How motosharing works

The process is fairly similar for all companies, with only minor differences between each of them.

All the vehicles are completely electric, so you’ll never have to worry about re-fueling or having keys with you. You’ll manage your account, bookings, rides, and payments completely through your phone.

That means that the first thing you’ll need to do is to download the app on your phone and sign up. There is no subscription cost, you’ll always pay for the usage of the vehicles.

One of the features common to all motosharing services is the presence of a designated area. This is the part of Paris where you’re allowed to circulate and park your vehicle. It is also where you’ll find all available mopeds.

The designated area covers Paris’ main urban zone (arrondissements 1 through 20). However, there might be limited traffic areas or off-limits enclosures where you’re not allowed to park, so always check with the app.

Sign-up process

After you have downloaded the app, you’ll have to input your information and required documentation (a driving licence and ID). Then you’ll be asked to choose a payment plan (either pay-as-you-go or pre-paid). After the verification process is done, you’ll be able to start riding your moped.

Rental process

On the app you will have a map of Paris showing you where the vehicles are. You can select the one closest to you and unlock it through the app. If you’re driving a moped, you’ll be able to open the case and wear the helmet that is provided with the vehicle and drive off.

At the end of your ride, you can park pretty much anywhere in the permitted area and stop the app’s timer.

Cityscoot

Cityscoot is one of the major moped-sharing apps in Paris. Within the designated area in the city, you’ll be able to find and rent out any one of the available mopeds. Helmets are always provided along with insurance.

Cityscoot offers pay-as-you-go subscriptions or pre-paid plans. That means that you don’t have to commit to any subscription plan if you don’t want to. Cityscoot also has plenty of offers for young riders and users over 60.

Cityscoot requires its users to be over 18 years of age and provide a valid form of ID along with a driving license (AM, A, B, C, or D licences are all accepted). You only need an international driver’s licence if the agreement between your country of origin and France requires it.

Yego

Yego has a fleet of 700 moped in Paris with a unique design that distinguishes it from other companies. The vintage Vespa-looking vehicles can be easily booked and driven all around Paris. Each one of them is personalised with a different name, so you can ride a Camille or a Julien, whichever is up to your taste.

As with the other apps, you have a pay-as-you-go payment option and different pre-paid packages. Two helmets and insurance are always included in the price, so you don’t have to worry about safety.

The conditions to drive Yego mopeds are pretty standard. You have to be over the age of 18, and provide a valid ID and driver’s licence. Accepted licences are AM, A1, A2, or B. B licences can be used starting from their first day of validity.

An international driver’s licence is needed only if the agreement between your country of origin and France requires such a permit.

Yego advantages and disadvantages

The pros of using Yego are:

  • The quantity of vehicles in Paris. It’s easy to find a scooter close to you at all times.
  • The simplicity of the app. It is user-friendly and there is only one pay-as-you-go option and four pre-paid packs.

The cons of using Yego are:

  • The vehicle power. The mopeds look great, but they only reach a speed of 50 km/h (31 mph) and don’t have great acceleration, especially uphill or after stopping at a red light.
  • The lack of phone assistance. Yego only offers an online chat, available 24/7.

Cooltra

Cooltra offers two types of services. The first one, through their app, is the same one offered by Yego and Cityscoot. You can find an available moped in the city, ride it, and pay for it with a pay-as-you-go plan or a pre-paid pack. Helmets are included.

The second type of service is for longer-term rentals, where you keep the electric moped for entire days or even a month. In this case, you can make your reservation online and pick up the vehicle yourself or have it delivered to you. Non-electric motorcycles are also available for long-term rentals.

Much like the other motosharing apps, Cooltra requires users to be over 18 and provide a valid ID and driver’s licence. Accepted licences are AM, A1, A2, or B. B licences can be used starting from their first day of validity. You only need an international driver’s licence if the agreement between your country of origin and France requires it.

Prices

The per-minute rental service has several pay-as-you-go options and credit packs.

The two pay-as-you-go services offer different insurance coverage. You will be covered either way, but you may be required to contribute up to €99.00 (with the Insurance Plus price plan) or €500.00 (in case you have a Base price plan).

On top of the pay-as-you-go options, there are three unlimited usage passes (within a limited time) and four credit packs. The bigger the credit pack, the lower the cost per minute.

Cooltra accepts Mastercard or VISA credit, debit, or pre-paid cards.

Here are the various packages.

Cooltra’s extra features

These are all the extra functionalities and information that might be useful during the rental process.

  • A selected moped stays reserved for 15 minutes. After this time, your reservation is automatically cancelled at no extra cost.

  • When you get to where the moped is parked, you easily find it by pressing the “beep-beep” button. This will make the horn sound and the indicators blink.

  • The two helmets are so that you can take a passenger with you.

  • As long as you park the scooter in the designated area, you can drive it even outside it.

  • If you have to run an errand or briefly stop, you can set the moped on pause mode during your trip - this will cost €0.10 per minute.

Cooltra advantages and disadvantages

The pros of using Cooltra are:

  • The variety of options. On Cooltra you have rentals by the minute, day, or week, with plenty of payment options (pay-as-you-go, credit packs, unlimited usage passes)
  • The personal assistance. Once you are a customer, you get a phone number to contact in case of need.
