How to reach Rome from the port of Civitavecchia

Regional train

Regional trains are undoubtedly the cheapest way to reach Rome from Civitavecchia, although their main drawback is that they’re relatively slow. The journey to Termini station in central Rome takes about 80 minutes.

The regional line connecting Civitavecchia with Rome is the FL5. It has 13 stations in total and four of them are of great interest to those who want to visit Rome:

Regional trains are usually double-deckers and don’t have numbered seats. It’s common that few seats are available during peak hours. During the rest of the day, it shouldn’t be a problem to find a seat, even if you travel with luggage.

Prices

The price of a ticket to Rome on the FL5 regional train from Civitavecchia is €4.60. The only exception is the rides to Termini train station, which cost €5.00.

To return to Civitavecchia on the same day, it’s best to buy a BIRG ticket, which allows you to travel back on the FL5 regional train. The card also includes unlimited travel by public transportation in Rome and is valid until midnight on the day it’s first used.

A BIRG ticket for 5 zones costs €12.00 and is cost-effective if you take the metro or bus at least twice during your stay in Rome. It can be purchased at the Civitavecchia train station.

Please, take into account that this ticket doesn’t include the transfer from the port to Civitavecchia’s train station. For this, you must take a bus, which costs €2.00. On foot, it’s about 20 minutes to the train station.

In a nutshell, the total cost of a one-day visit to Rome with the purchase of a BIRG ticket would be €16.00 (€12.00 + €4.00 for bus transfers between the port and Civitavecchia train station).
