Among the 100 Monet pieces housed here - which make the Museum the one with the largest Monet collection in the world - the most important is perhaps 1872’s Impression, Sunrise . The reason for the painting’s fame is that it inspired the name of the whole Impressionist movement.

Aside from the numerous Monet canvases, the Marmottan Museum also holds many other pieces by key figures in the Impressionist and Post Impressionist movements, such as Degas, Manet, Pissarro, Renoir, Rodin, Gaugin, Signac, Sisley, and Morisot, and even some Modernist works by Chagall.
