Tickets and Passes for Valencia Public Transportation

In Valencia, there are many transport ticket options valid for buses, trams, and the metro. Some of them are combined, while others don’t share the same fare system. Here we’ll help you choose the option that best fits your needs.

Tickets and Passes for Valencia Public Transportation in a nutshell...

Valencia offers multiple public transport ticket options across four fare zones (A, B, C and A-B overlap), with most visitors primarily using Zone A which covers the city center, tourist attractions and beaches.

Main ticket options:

Single tickets: €1.50 for one zone. Available for metro, tram or bus separately. Not interchangeable. Purchase from drivers (bus), machines or attendants (metro/tram).

SUMA 10: €8.00 for Zone A.  Best overall value with 10 journeys valid across all transport types with one free transfer per journey. Can be shared among multiple travelers and loaded onto a cardboard (€1) or plastic card (€2).

Bonobus: €8.50 for 10 journeys valid only on city buses with unlimited transfers within one hour. Requires plastic Móbilis card (€2).

SUMA T/T+ passes: Unlimited travel for 1-3 days across all transport modes. Standard T passes cover zones A-B (€4-12), while T+ passes include Zone C/airport access (€5.50-23).

Valencia Tourist Card: Combines unlimited transport with museum access and discounts. Available for 24h (€15), 48h (€20) or 72h (€25).

Tickets can be purchased at metro stations, tobacco shops, kiosks, or through dedicated apps like EMTicket (bus tickets) and RecargaSUMA (reloading passes).

There are a few factors to take into consideration when choosing your ticket or pass. You should, for example, consider the duration of your stay, the number of times you plan to use the services, and which of them you will be using most.

Remember that Valencia is a great city to explore on foot and that it is also extremely bike-friendly, with an extensive bike-lane presence. That’s why we recommend alternating public transport with walking tours in the city centre.

To help you explore Valencia we have created our own selection of itineraries.

Public Transportation Zones

For public transport use, the city is divided into three concentric areas (zonas in Spanish) and one overlap area. The majority of tickets and passes come in different zone-coverage options. Here you have an explanation of the different areas so that you can make the best choice with regards to your transport ticket.

  • Zone A is the biggest and most central one. It covers the city with its most important sightseeing spots, the old centre, the newer and trendy neighbourhoods, as well as the beach. The tram service runs mainly in this area. You will most likely be moving around zone A on your visit.
  • Zone A-B is the overlap area. Its function is to keep prices low for those that travel between bordering zones. People moving from these areas to the nearby zones A or B (and vice versa) will be able to get single-zone tickets. The municipalities belonging to this area are those of l’Horta - the larger urban area of Valencia.
  • Zone B is the area directly around A. It covers mostly small towns and municipalities belonging to the metropolitan areas of Camp de Turia (northeast of the city), Camp de Morvedre (north of the city), and Ribera (south of the city). You are not likely to visit this area, as it is of little tourist interest.
  • Zone C is equivalent to the airport. It serves the purpose of separating the airport from all other areas.

Valencia’s public transport zones are designed to make exploring the city and surrounding areas easy, with Zone A covering the city centre and most tourist destinations.

What Ticket Should You Choose?

To help you choose the best ticket, here is a brief overview of available options. These are not all the available ticket and pass options, but they are the most interesting for tourists.

For example, there are monthly pass options (like SUMA Mensual and SUMA Mensual Jove). These have not been included, as you are not likely to need passes for that long, and obtaining them requires an appointment and documents.

*Children under 10 may travel free of charge while accompanied by an adult with a valid transport ticket. A maximum of 2 children per adult is allowed.

If you still have a Bonometro or Bono Trasbordo (old transport passes, no longer available), you can still use them. They will be valid for another six months, starting January 31st, 2022.

You can also load your SUMA passes (except the monthly options) on a Móbilis card, either plastic or cardboard.

Remember to always validate your travel card. Normally, in underground metro stations, you will find turnstile gates at entrance and exit points. You will need to tap your ticket or transport card on the red circle in order to open the swinging barriers and access the platforms. You will also need to tap on your way out with the same ticket.

In underground metro stations, you’ll find swinging barriers to access the platforms. To validate your ticket and open them, just tap your card on the red circle. You’ll need to do the same on your way out.

However, in some above-ground stations (often located in the outskirts of the city), you will find free access to the platforms. This doesn’t mean you don’t have to tap your card. You must tap your card on the column-like access control devices (they have the same red circle as the other kind).

Tram stations and above-ground metro stations have column-like access control.

If you don’t do this and metro security checks your card, you will be fined. On the bus and at tram stations, you only need to validate once.

People with severe disabilities (equal to or greater than 64% who require the care of someone for their displacement) can be accompanied by a person with the same transport title, provided they can prove their disability.

Our recommendations…

If you don’t plan on using public transport more than three times a day, we would recommend using the 10-journey SUMA card.

The card is valid all across metro, bus, and suburban train services. It is a great option because it has virtually no expiration date, and it is not personal. This means they can be used by more people (up to 15), even on the same journey.

Another great pass is the Valencia Tourist Card (VTC). This discount card will give you free public transport (bus, metro, tram) in all zones, as well as discounts and free entries to many tourist sites. Just keep in mind that the VTC is only valid for 24, 48, or 72 hours, depending on the one you choose.

Single Tickets

The single ticket (billete sencillo in Spanish) is particularly useful for occasional trips by public transport. Single tickets are not interchangeable, you will thus have to buy separate tickets for separate means of transport.

Single Bus/Metrobus ticket

A single EMT bus or Metrobus ticket can be purchased directly on the bus from the driver, or through the EMTicket app. Bus tickets purchased on board do not allow for transfers, while a ticket purchased on the app EMTicket is valid for one hour and has no transfer limits.

Single bus tickets are printed on paper directly on board. They are the only kind of ticket that doesn’t need to be validated after purchase.

The cost of the ticket varies depending on the areas covered. All bus tickets covering one zone will cost €1.50, two zones €2.80, and three zones €4.80.

Zones
Price
Zones One zone Two zones Three zones
Price €1.50 €2.80 €4.80

Single Metro/Tram ticket

A single metro or tram ticket can be purchased directly at a metro station, either from an automated machine or from an attendant at a stand.

Prices vary depending on the zones in which you are travelling. A one-zone ticket will cost €1.50, two zones €2.80, and three zones €4.80.

You will most likely stay in Zone A, except for your journey between the airport and the city (which covers zones A-B-C). Once you have bought the ticket, you will need to tap it upon entering and exiting the metro.

Keep in mind that the price of a single metro or tram ticket does not include the cost of the physical cardboard ticket. Remember that you can load up to four single tickets on the same card, so if you are travelling with someone else, you don’t have to buy two separate cards.

Metro Valencia tickets and passes can be loaded on cardboard Móbilis cards like these.

You can also re-use the same card to reload the same or different travel options (for instance a 10-journey SUMA), thus not having to pay the extra €1.00. This is why it’s always best to keep your ticket after use.

For more details on how to get this pass, check the how to buy your ticket section in this article.

Bonobus

The Bonobus, as the name suggests, is a bus travel card. It is valid for 10 journeys on all EMT bus lines. Each trip allows unlimited transfers between buses for 1 hour since you first tap the card on the first bus you get on.

Remember that this pass is not valid for metro, tram, or any other bus service outside of EMT bus lines. EMT bus lines (the red buses) mainly connect different parts of Valencia’s city centre, and are for the most part in Zone A.

EMT bus lines do not include MetroBus services (the yellow buses, like line 150 to the airport), which connect Valencia city with the surrounding suburban and metropolitan areas.

Bonobus passes can be loaded on hard plastic Móbilis cards like these. You can buy them at a kiosk, tobacco shop, or EMT Customer Service office.

You can get this pass at a kiosk, tobacco shop, or EMT Customer Service office. On top of the Bonobus itself, which costs €8.50, you will also need to purchase a hard plastic Mobilis card, which will cost €2.00.

You cannot load this pass on a cardboard card. For more details on how to get this pass, check the how to buy your ticket section in this article.

The pass is not personal, so it can be used by more than one person at a time. Just remember to tap it as many times as there are people with you.

This pass is ideal if you plan on mainly using the bus services in the city centre over all other public transport. However, we recommend other passes, like the SUMA 10, as they are cheaper and include all other forms of public transport.

SUMA 10

The SUMA 10, is a 10-journey combination pass, valid for EMT and MetroBus bus services, metro services, and Renfe Cercanias (short-distance trains) in selected areas. It allows for one transfer between different lines or transport methods.

You can choose whether to include one, two, or three zones when you get your SUMA 10 card. Again, we recommend getting the card for Zone A only, as that is the area in which you will primarily be moving.

Passes like the SUMA 10 can be loaded on cardboard and plastic Móbilis cards.

Each journey allows for one transfer in the first 90 minutes since first use. This time limit is 110 minutes for a two or three-zone card.

Remember that a Zone A SUMA 10 card does not include MetroBus line 150 to the airport. Only MetroBus (the yellow buses) lines that move in zone A and A-B are included in this pass.

The price of a single-zone SUMA 10 is €8.00 (either zone A or zone B), for a two-zone SUMA 10, you will pay €12.00, and a three-zone pass (zones A-B-C, thus including the airport) will cost €20.00.

You can load these passes either on a plastic card (€2.00) or on a cardboard card (€1.00). You can get these cards at an automated Renfe Cercanias or MetroValencia machine, kiosks, and tobacco shops.

If you have a Spanish phone number, you can also top your card up on the app RecargaSUMA, which replaces the app previously known as RecargaMobilis. For more details on how to get this pass, check the “How to buy your ticket” section in this article.

This pass is probably your best option, as it works for any form of public transport. It can be loaded with up to 30 journeys at a time and it is not personal, meaning that it can be used by up to 15 people. Just remember to tap it as many times as there are people with you. You should also tap any time you transfer from one transport method to the other or from one bus to another.

SUMA T and T+ Passes

The SUMA T and T+ options are unlimited travel passes for one person, valid for EMT and MetroBus buses, metro, trams, and Renfe Cercanias (short distance trains). They have a duration of one, two, or three days and are valid in zones A-B (for T passes) or zones A-B-C (for T+ passes).

SUMA T/T+ passes offer unlimited travel for 1-3 days across all transport modes. Standard T passes cover zones A-B, while T+ passes include Zone C/airport access.

These passes are a good option for days in which you plan on using public transport a lot. You can load them on hard plastic (€2.00) or cardboard cards (€1.00). You can get these cards at an automated Renfe Cercanias or MetroValencia machine, kiosks, and tobacco shops.

If you have a Spanish phone number, you can also top your card up on the app RecargaSUMA . For more details on how to get this pass, check the “How to buy your ticket” section in this article.

SUMA T Passes

Each of the three SUMA T options has a different time validity. T1 is valid for one day, T2 for two days, and T3 for three days. As long as you tap your card within the limit hours, you can finish your journey after the card has expired.

The exclusion of Zone C means that they are not valid for transportbetween the airportand the city.

In order to travel to and from the airport, you will have to buy a T+ pass. The only difference between the normal T and the T+ options is that the latter are valid for zones A-B-C, thus including the airport.

These passes are only sold at selected stops, like the Airport metro station. Remember that you can also use other passes to get there, like the single ticket, the SUMA 10, the Valencia Tourist Card.

Valencia Tourist Card

Valencia Tourist Cards are all-inclusive tourist cards with a limited time validity (24, 48, or 72 hours). The cards have limitless use across EMT and MetroBus buses (zone A), trams, and metro (zones A-B-C). This pass is not valid for any Renfe services.

The cards are activated on first use, be it transport or establishments. The hours of validity will start to count from that moment. This means that if, for instance, you activate your 24h VTC on Thursday at 5:00 pm, it will be valid until Friday at 5:00 pm.

Aside from free public transport, the cards offer free admission to all municipal museums and monuments, discounts up to 50% in selected (130) tourist services, shops, and restaurants, as well as two free tapas and drinks. Along with the card, you will receive a free map of the city with a discount guide.

You can get a SUMA 10 ticket at any selling point.  These include automated machines or stands at Renfe Cercanias and metro stations, kiosks, and tobacco shops. You can get a VTC on the official website, authorised kiosks, or tourist info offices located in Calle de la Paz, Ayuntamiento, Joaquin Sorolla, and at the Airport.

The support on which you can load your transport tickets (Móbilis card) comes in two formats. They are both reusable and can either be in cardboard (€1.00), or in hard plastic (€2.00 for a regular one, and €4.00 for a personalised one with a picture).

Bonobus passes require plastic Móbilis cards but single metro tickets and other tickets and passes can go either on a plastic or cardboard card.

Paper Tickets

Only single bus tickets come in paper, and you buy them directly from the bus driver. Remember that many buses do not have card readers on board, so it is always good to have cash with you if you are planning to travel this way.

In Valencia, you can easily buy bus tickets directly from the driver, who will print your ticket on the spot using this handy machine.

These tickets are single-use and can be discarded afterwards. They are the only kind of ticket that doesn’t need to be tapped on the readers (validated).

Cardboard Tickets and Passes

All transport passes except for Bonobus and Valencia Tourist Cards can be loaded on cardboard cards.

Single metro tickets (cardboard) can only be bought from an automated machine or from an attendant at a metro station. All automated machines will have a selection of languages to choose from, including English. Before using a machine, make sure that you can use your preferred payment method, as some machines take only cards or only cash.

Cardboard Móbilis cards can be purchased at an automatic vending machine. For a plastic Móbilis, you’ll need to go to a customer service office, a kiosk or a tobacco shop.

The first time you buy a cardboard metro ticket, also known as Móbilis Card, it will cost you €1.00. You can load up to four single tickets at a time on this card, so if you are travelling with someone else, you don’t have to buy two separate ones.

These tickets are also re-usable, so don’t throw yours away, and you will be able to load other journeys on them (like SUMA tickets).

Cardboard tickets and passes can be purchased at automated machines or stands at Renfe Cercanias and metro stations, kiosks, and tobacco shops. Here you can check out all available selling points .

Plastic Cards

Most transport passes can be loaded on Móbilis plastic cards. Only Bonobus needs to be loaded on one. SUMA 10, SUMA T and T+ passes can all be loaded either on cardboard or plastic.

The locations at which you can get these plastic Mobilis or SUMA cards also differ based on which kind of pass you are purchasing. If you are getting a Bonobus, you can get your plastic card at a tobacco shop, at kiosks, or at an EMT customer office. Afterwards, you will be able to top it up online at the website of EMTValencia or via the EMTValencia app.

Remember that you can only get SUMA T+ passes in some metro stations, like at the Airport. These T+ tickets continue to be sold at Renfe Cercanias stands, kiosks, and tobacco shops. You can also reload your card on the app RecargaSUMA , previously known as RecargaMobilis. Remember you’ll need a Spanish phone number to use this app.

In Valencia, local tobacco shops called ‘Estancos’ are convenient spots to purchase public transportation tickets, offering a quick and easy way to get around the city.

The Valencia Tourist Card is also loaded on a plastic card (but not a Móbilis one). You will be able to recycle the card at the end of its validity by bringing it to a Tourist Office. There is no cashback for this, but you do get to do something good for the environment.

Useful Apps

There are a few useful apps for buying tickets or passes, checking the number of journeys left in your pass, or simply for checking the schedules and routes of the different public transport options in Valencia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here you can find quick answers to all of your questions. Linked, you’ll find the articles or the sections of the articles that can give you more detailed information.

There are several ticket options available in Valencia. You can choose between single-use tickets, daily tickets, or 10-journey tickets, depending on which one better suits your needs.

You can have a look at our comparison table to get an idea.

The public transport tickets most similar to all-transport passes are the SUMA passes and the Valencia Tourist Card. They are valid across metro, tram, and bus networks (and the SUMA even for Cercanías trains).

Valencia is divided into four public transport zones. Depending on how many zones your ticket covers, it will cost differently.

There are passes valid across all public transport (SUMA passes and the VTC) and also tickets valid only for buses.

Only for specific journeys (like from the Airport to the city and vice versa). Otherwise, it’s much more conveniente to get the SUMA passes.

In our opinion, the SUMA 10-journey tickets are you best option. They are valid across metro, tram, buses, and Renfe Cercanias (regional trains), and they can be used by more than one person.

A single metro ticket (for one zone) in Valencia costs €1.50. There are also other options, like 10-journey tickets, day passes, or even monthly passes (not recommended if you’re only on holiday here).

A single bus ticket in Valencia costs €1.50. There are also other options, like 10-journey tickets or day passes.

Valencia has quite a few public transport apps, and some allow you to get your tickets and passes online.

You can recharge your Bonobus on the EMT Valencia app and get single bus tickets on the EMTicket app. For SUMA passes, there is the RecargaSUMA app.

However, not all of these apps work perfectly, so we suggest you check out our app guide to see which ones work best.

A Móbilis is a card where you can load your Valencia public transport passes and tickets. They come in plastic (€2.00) or cardboard (€1.00).

A SUMA card is a transport card where you can load SUMA passes (10-journeys, day tickets, monthly, etc). These passes are valid across metro, tram, EMT bus, Renfe Cercanias, and some MetroBus services.

You can also load your SUMA passes on a Móbilis card.

A Bonobus is a 10-journey EMT bus pass. This means that it is valid only for EMT buses (zones A and AB).

Yes, Valencia metro, trams, and buses are free for people under 30. To have free access to these networks you have to request a free transport card online.

The only prerequisite is to have a Spanish DNI or NIE.

In terms of functionality, they are exactly the same. The only difference is that the plastic Móbilis (€2.00) will last longer than a card Móbilis (€1.00). Bonobus passes can only be loaded on a plastic Móbilis.

Yes, the tram and metro in Valencia are part of the same network, so they share the same tickets and passes.
