Conciergerie
The Conciergerie is a former Royal residence turned into Paris’ most feared prison in the 18th century.
The Conciergerie, whose name means lodge in English, was a royal residence and later on a prison in Paris. The building, today a national monument within the perimeter of the Palais de Justice (Palace of Justice), was originally part of the then-royal palace, the Palais de la Cité.
Entry to the Conciergerie is included in the Paris Museum Pass, which we highly recommend getting - [you can do it here]( https://www.getyourguide.com/paris-l16/paris-museum-pass-t49746/?partner_id=IG4VKS7&utm_medium=online_publisher&placement=content-top&cmp=Inline - to avoid queues and get free access to dozens of attractions in Paris.
The Conciergerie is not famous for its days as a royal stay, but rather because of its grim and central role in the French Revolution as a prison. It is estimated that during this time alone, almost 3,000 of its prisoners were tried and sentenced to the guillotine here, with as many as 600 prisoners being held at a time.
During the Reign of Terror , many upper-class and wealthy members of society were imprisoned here, and this gave rise to a lucrative business in the Conciergerie. While regular prisoners slept in cramped and dirty cells, the rich could pay the commanders to have a bed, furniture, receive mail, and even have their clothes washed.
Today you can visit the Conciergerie and see reconstructions of the various types of cells the prison housed, from the most comfortable to the smallest and most restrictive.
